Memorial to the Six Million – Eternal Life-Hemshech

Memorial Restoration Project

Memorial To The Six Million under construction-1964

Restoration is underway for the Memorial to the Six Million. The amazing “gift” to our city and state was designed, created, and entirely paid for by Holocaust Survivors living in the Atlanta area in 1964. These survivors wanted to memorialize their murdered family members and the six million Jewish people who had no gravesites. The Memorial is Georgia’s oldest reminder of the Holocaust and remains a centerpiece of Holocaust education and observances in Atlanta.

Although restorative work has begun, considerable additional funding is needed to complete the necessary repairs and updates. Your gift to Eternal Life-Hemshech will help breathe new life into preserving our 58-year-old Memorial. Some of the items to be completed are:

  • New gas lines for the six tall white torches representing the six million murdered
  • Replacing the torches’ original gas igniting system with an electric spark igniting system
  • Cleaning and waxing bronze plaques within the Memorial
  • Stone regrouting and repointing
  • Landscape improvements surrounding the Memorial

This Memorial is a holy and special place for all of us to say Kaddish (Jewish memorial prayer) and to enable others in the future to observe Yom Hashoah each year. Your contribution to restore the memorial will help achieve our Survivors’ dream: to teach future generations they must never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust so this terrible history will not be repeated.

The Memorial qualified for the National Register of Historic Places under special criteria, and was listed on the National Register for Historic Places on April 21, 2008.

Hemshech means “continuation” in Hebrew. Thank you for continuing our Holocaust Survivors’ legacy to Atlanta and Georgia by helping restore and maintain this treasure for our children and their children’s children.
